About IslandJon New Richey Reserve Vodka

IslandJon New Richey Reserve Vodka is produced by IslandJon Vodka – an Atlanta-based brand that produces their product in New Port Richey, Florida. It was founded in 2015 by father-son duo Levi John and Kevin John. As a brand, they aim to celebrate the family’s Trinidad and Tobago heritage and create a quality vodka that changes the narrative on Caribbean spirits.

Their vodkas are made using both white and yellow sweet corn. This particular bottle of New Richey Reserve Vodka is their unflavored variety. It is distilled 6 times, and charcoal filtered 8 times using micro-coconut husk filtration. It is rested for 30 days before bottling.

My Tasting notes

The aroma of this vodka was fruity on my first whiff, followed by an overall smooth and relatively clean scent. The fruit notes quickly faded into the background, but did add a bit of character.

Small snifter glass with clear liquid next to a bottle of ISLANDJON vodka with only the bottom half of the bottle showing, sitting on a wooden table

I took a sip, and there were mixed fruit notes in the front, followed by a fleeting burst of sweetness that could have been brown sugar or something similar. The mouthfeel was slightly thicker than the average vodka. Overall, the flavors were subtle, but added a nice dimension that I enjoyed.

Cocktail

Yield: 1 drink

Pomegranate Cosmopolitan

Coupe glass filled with dark red liquid and with an orange peel garnish pinned to the rim, sitting on a wooden table

Ingredients

  • 1oz vodka
  • 1oz triple sec
  • 1oz pomegranate juice
  • 1/2oz lime juice
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a coupe glass.

Inside of a cocktail, this vodka performed very well. It supported the mixer flavors nicely, especially the orange notes, and felt well balanced. There was basically no alcohol heat, and the drink really went down easy.

Bottom Line

RATING: 5/5

Overall, I had a great experience with this bottle of IslandJon New Richey Reserve Vodka. It really exceeded my expectations, particularly in regards to the smoothness and unobtrusive flavor notes. It is simply a great mixing vodka for a great value.

One thing to be aware of is that this vodka is a little on the sweet side. I don’t personally feel that it’s too sweet, nor that the sugar is hiding anything, as is sometimes the case with other brands. But I know that some people will still want to be aware.

At the end of the day, I would definitely recommend this vodka to others, and I feel good about supporting this company. Since my official tasting, I’ve also been making drinks for my household with IslandJon, and everyone seems unanimously impressed. This gets an easy 5 stars.

As always, drink responsibly.
