About Licor 43

Licor 43 is produced by Diego Zamora S.A. – a Spain-based company founded by the Zamora family in the 1940s. They produce a small selection of specialty liqueurs, beginning with the original, flagship “43“. As a brand, they aim to create an enjoyable product that evokes an energy of passion.

The recipe for Licor 43 is based on Liqvor Mirabilis, a liqueur made with various fruits and herbs that was created in the Carthago Nova region now known as Cartagena, Spain. The Zamora family’s recipe is made using 43 mostly secret ingredients that include a mixture of sweet, floral, spicy, fruity, citrusy, botanical, and toasted flavors. Some flavors that are disclosed are coriander, vanilla, orange, and lemon blossom.

My Tasting notes

I began to take a whiff of this liqueur, and the scent was sweet and candy-like. There was a distinct marshmallow aroma, and a hint of something else that reminded me of root beer.

As I took a sip, the liqueur was smooth on the tongue, with a bit of heat in the throat. There was strong marshmallow, and a more subtle root-like flavor that once again reminded me of root beer. Other than that, I could not really pinpoint any of the botanical ingredients. That said, I did find it to be a pretty tasty sipper!

Cocktail

For my cocktail, it seemed like a no brainer to try out a classic Carajillo! Although the Carajillo cocktail seems to have several versions depending on your location, one common version that is popular in Mexico uses Licor 43 as the spirit.

Yield: 1 drink

Carajillo

Coupe glass filled with dark brown liquid topped with a thin layer of golden beige foam, ganished with 3 coffee beans

Ingredients

  • 2oz Licor 43
  • 2oz espresso
  • garnish: 3 coffee beans

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a small glass.
  3. Garnish with about 3 coffee beans if desired.

Inside of a cocktail, this liqueur was smooth and delicious. I did find the recipe a little bit bitter for my taste, as my taste buds are used to coffee with cream and sugar. However, it was fairly well balanced, and would have only needed a little bit of simple syrup to satisfy my sweet tooth. I think it’s an excellent alternative to an espresso martini, especially for folks like me who don’t think the flavor of vodka pairs well with the flavor of coffee.

Bottom Line

RATING: 5/5

At the end of the day, I really enjoyed this bottle of Licor 43, though the flavor is nothing at all like I expected. Given the description, I was expecting a much more herbal flavor, when in reality it is sweet, dessert-like, and a little bit earthy. I think I will really like experimenting with this liqueur, and coming up with some fun recipes.

I think it really makes a good mixing spirit due to how smooth it is, and how versatile the flavor is. I definitely recommend picking up a bottle if you get the chance.

As always, drink responsibly.
