About Volcan de Mi Tierra Tequila Reposado

Volcan de Mi Tierra Tequila Reposado is produced by Volcan – a Huaxtla, Jalisco based spirits brand that produces a variety of tequila expressions. They take pride in being a single-NOM tequila, with their own distillery being the exclusive producer of their expressions.

The brand sources their agave from both the lowland and highland regions of Jalisco. Volcan tequilas are advertised as additive-free, using only blue agave, volcanic water, and yeast. This particular bottle of Tequila Reposado is made with highland agave, which is cooked using an autoclave, crushed, fermented, and distilled in a copper pot still. It is then aged in either an American Oak barrel or a European Oak barrel, creating separate reposado tequilas that are then blended together.

My Tasting notes

I took a whiff of this tequila, and the aroma was lightly sweet with a vegetal quality to the agave. It was smooth, airy, and overall calming to smell.

My first sip was quite tingly on the tongue, but mellowed more and more as I continued. There was clear agave in the finish, getting slightly more vegetal with each sip. The flavor was relatively clean and delicate.

  • 2oz (60ml) Tequila
  • 1 1/2oz (45ml) Orange Juice
  • 3/4oz (22ml) Grapefruit Juice
  • 1/2oz (15ml) Lime Juice
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Top 2oz (60ml) Grapefruit Soda

Instructions

  1. Add the tequila, orange juice, grapefruit juice, and lime juice to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a jarrito de barro or other cup.
  3. Add the grapefruit soda, and top with a little more ice if needed.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Inside of a cocktail, this tequila was smooth, and added a nice molasses-like sweetness to the mix of flavors. Towards the end of the drink, there was slightly more vegetal bitterness. But throughout, my cocktail was absolutely delicious.

RATING: 4/5

At the end of the day, I was pretty impressed with this bottle of Volcan de Mi Tierra Tequila Reposado. It is decent for sipping, and even better as a mixing tequila. It brought a nice balance between being clean-tasting and being agave-forward. The noticeably vegetal flavor was interesting but not super complex, which I admit I had some mixed feelings about when it came to deciding whether to give this bottle 4 or 5 stars. The marketing materials for this reposado talk about toasted tobacco, pineapple, citrus, and honey flavors coming from the barrel aging, none of which I really noticed. Perhaps some of the bitterness of the agave was actually coming from the tobacco, though I was not able to tease apart these flavors while sipping. I tend to have a bias towards complex spirits, but there is also value in letting the agave shine in its own right, especially for a reposado which is only slightly aged. Ultimately, though, the complexity promised by the marketing didn’t match what I felt was a simple and clean tequila, so I decided not to give it a perfect score.

That said, I do see this bottle becoming my go-to tequila as I wrap up the summer season with some more cantaritos and margaritas. I would definitely recommend picking up a bottle of Volcan de Mi Tierra Tequila Reposado for yourself if you get the chance.

As always, drink responsibly.
