About Casamigos Tequila Reposado

With the recent increase in popularity and demand for high quality spirits, many newcomers are finding success in the growing industry. But few have found as much as Casamigos, who benefited from a head start to turn a simplified line of tequila, including Casamigos Tequila Reposado, into a massive profit.

Casamigos began as a passion project in 2013 by three friends, actor George Clooney and businessmen Rande Gerber and Mike Meldmen, with no previous tequila producing experience. While together on one of their frequent vacations in Mexico, the trio had an idea to create the perfect tequila for their personal tastes. This lead to relationships with distillers in Jalisco, Mexico and eventually the creation of Casamigos Tequila. The company would be sold to the Diageo beverage company for $700 million in 2017.

In keeping with the intimate theme of three friends drinking together, Casamigos has a simple line of spirits. They only produce a Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo tequila along with a Mezcal. The Casamigos Tequila Reposado is aged in American white oak barrels for 7 months before bottling.

Danny Ocean

3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

3/4 oz Fresh Pink Grapefruit Juice

1/2 oz Agave Nectar

1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur

2 oz Casamigos Reposado Tequila

Combine all ingredients into tin shaker

Add ice, shake vigorously and strain into rocks glass

Add fresh ice and Garnish

As I browsed the Casamigos website for some cocktails, the Danny Ocean immediately caught my eye since I already love Palomas. Since the Casamigos Tequila Reposado has strong sugar and vanilla notes, I was curious how it would mix with the citrus. I was also looking forward to using Maraschino liqueur because I haven’t used it enough after impulse buying a bottle earlier in the year.

The Danny Ocean cocktail was a bit on the sweet side but still quite enjoyable. Vanilla notes came through but weren’t as strong as I was expecting.  The citrus and Maraschino liqueur are pretty strong on their own so it balanced well enough. I did find the liqueur overpowered the first Danny Ocean I made so I ended up scaling it back to about a bar spoon.

Bottom Line

RATING: 2/5

Even though there are positives with Casamigos Tequila Reposado, I was a bit disappointed. The Casamigos marketing highlights their intention to be a tequila for drinking neat or on the rocks, the way the original creators prefer, but I found it too unbalanced. It’s smooth and has some decent flavors, but the vanilla and sugar/candy notes were overwhelming and had an almost artificial quality.

I can see how this could be appealing, and adding ice or mixing in a cocktail helped, but the price is pretty steep. My local Bevmo only had 375ml bottles of Casamigos Reposado in stock for about $30 but I’ve seen the 750ml for around $50. There’s so much competition in this general price range that it’s hard to recommend.

As always, drink responsibly.
