My Tasting notes

I began to pick out the nose notes of this tequila, and found it to be very pleasant and earthy. The aroma was very smooth with no alcohol scent at all. Overall, it had a warm, nutty scent rather than a fresh, agave-like scent.

I took my first sip, and it had a very warm flavor with a slight nuttiness. The aftertaste was a bit strong in regards to the alcohol flavor, which lingered in my throat. Overall, I cannot see myself sipping this tequila straight, as the alcohol flavor was a bit harsh for my taste. However, I did still notice a sweet and earthy quality to the flavor that seemed promising for cocktails. Towards the end of my tasting, notes of chocolate and oak came out as well.

Cocktail

For my cocktail, I thought it would be a good time to start dreaming up this year’s perfect anti-Thanksgiving drink, as the holiday is just around the corner. Last year, I must admit my wine-based recipe was a little too unbalanced to be worth replicating. This year, I’m going for something a bit sweeter, with a tequila base to give it a different character. Hope you enjoy!

recipe by Emmeline Gonzalez-Beban

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 2 oz pure unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 1/4 oz cinnamon syrup
  • garnish: rosemary sprig drizzled with a red-colored syrup of your choice

Instructions

  1. add the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice, and shake until chilled.
  2. strain the mixture into a small cocktail glass (preferably a coupe or similar stemmed glass).
  3. secure a fresh rosemary sprig to top of the glass.
  4. with a small spoon, carefully drizzle a red-colored syrup of your choice over the rosemary sprig (I used maraschino cherry syrup from a jar of cherries).

Inside of a cocktail, this tequila performs well. My cocktail tasted nicely balanced, despite a relatively tart mixer. There was just the right amount of sweetness in the overall flavor. After about 5-6 sips of this drink, I could clearly taste the nutty flavors of the tequila, which were very nice.

Bottom Line

RATING: 4/5

Overall, I think that Azteca Azul Tequila Reposado is a very nice tequila that is especially ideal for fall & winter cocktails. The sweet and nutty flavor notes of this reposado pair well with seasonal mixers and spices.

That said, I don’t think this tequila is suitable for sipping. If you enjoy your tequila straight, you will probably want to keep looking.

However, I think it has a really interesting flavor for cocktails and is a decent choice for the price. Although it didn’t blow my mind, I think the lower price point ultimately reflects that, and I can see myself choosing this bottle again. I also really appreciate the company’s focus on the environment, and look forward to trying out some of Azteca Azul‘s other products.

As always, drink responsibly.
