About Slow Village Soju 21

Slow Village Soju 21 is produced by Baesangmyun Brewery Co., Ltd., a South Korea based spirits brand that markets itself as a “traditional liquor company”. Founded in 1996, Baesangmyun aims to restore traditional types of liquor as well as create new, innovative liquors.

This particular bottle of Soju 21 is distilled from Makgeolli, which is a rice wine that the brewery makes from 100% Korean domestic rice. They claim to use a “traditional distillation method”, but further details of their production process are not disclosed.

My Tasting notes

I took a whiff of this soju, and was met with an interesting and nice aroma. I couldn’t help but think it smelled like nail polish, but with a sweet and pleasant quality to it. As I continued, I couldn’t shake the nail polish comparison, or think of any other way to describe the notes.

I took a sip, and it had clear, gentle rice notes in the front. The rice flavor was more prominent than I expected, as my main frame of reference for rice-based spirits up until this point has been sake.

After a few sips, I also started to get that same nail polish note, which is a bit more fruity on the palate. There is not too much heat with this soju, and it’s surprisingly sippable.

Cocktail

Yield: 1 drink

Sour Seoul

Sour Seoul

Ingredients

  • 2oz soju
  • 3/4oz lemon juice
  • 3/4oz simple syrup

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled
  2. Strain the mixture into a small glass

Inside of a cocktail, this soju is delicious. The fruity notes came out nicely against the lemon juice, and the flavors overall had a nice complexity. There is also a slight candy-esque quality to the flavor. I really loved my cocktail.

Bottom Line

RATING: 5/5

Overall, I really enjoyed trying out this bottle of Slow Village Soju 21. Shockingly, this was actually my first time trying out soju, so I can’t necessarily do much comparison yet. However, as a standalone product, the flavors really wowed me, especially inside of a cocktail. It’s one of those bottles that gets my creative juices flowing, and makes me excited to experiment with new cocktail recipes. I would definitely recommend it to others, especially for anyone who is new to soju like me!

In comparison to the other rice based spirits that I’ve tried, mostly sake, I found that it has less of a fermentation flavor and more of a balanced rice flavor, which makes sense because sake does not get distilled and soju does. I found it very tasty.

And while this isn’t directly related to this bottle, during my research I also learned that the brewery voluntarily lowered their prices on several products back in 2024 in response to new tax policy in the area. Though someone more business minded than me could probably explain how it somehow benefits them, it still struck me as refreshing in a society where I’ve grown so accustomed to being price gouged at every turn. I think it speaks to the character of the company that they decided to pass on their savings to the consumer instead of pocketing the difference of having suddenly lower taxes. All in all, I feel pretty good about purchasing from this company.

As always, drink responsibly.
