Tito’s Handmade Vodka is produced by Tito’s – an Austin, Texas based spirits brand first launched in the mid 1990’s. The company claims that their Mockingbird Distillery was the first legal post-prohibition distillery in the state of Texas, and founder Tito Beveridge taught himself how to distill.
This bottle of Handmade Vodka is corn-based and pot-stilled, though the truthfulness about other advertised details of their production process are frequently called into question. As a result, I was not able to confirm further details with any level of confidence based on my research. It is bottled at 80 proof.
❖ ABV: 40%
❖ Distillery: Mockingbird Distillery
❖ Aging: N/A
❖ Price Point: low price
The aroma of this vodka was clean, airy, and slightly sweet. It was overall pretty smooth on the nose.
I took a sip, and it was decently smooth. The flavor was neutral yet sweet. I was pleasantly surprised with just how neutral the flavor was, as someone who typically finds vodka to be very flavorful when other people find it neutral. I found it to be delightfully inoffensive.
Towards the end of my straight tasting, I experienced a bit more heat in the throat.
❖ 2oz vodka
❖ 4oz orange juice
garnish: orange slice, maraschino cherry
Inside of a cocktail, this vodka was overall pretty neutral, although it did add a slight bread-like savoriness to the flavor. I enjoyed experiencing this drink.
RATING: 3/5
Ultimately, I was more impressed than I expected to be by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The flavor blends in nicely to a cocktail, and I definitely can see why this vodka has a bit of a cult following.
That said, as a consumer I was very turned off by the deceptive marketing about this product being handmade, when most external sources seem to agree that the distillery uses neutral grain spirit that it receives from elsewhere, and then further distills it to create the final product. While there is certainly nothing unusual about producing a vodka this way, labeling such a spirit as “craft” or “handmade” is pretty misleading.
Ultimately, I would have been comfortable recommending Tito’s Vodka if not for this deception. However, for the price point, I would much rather pick up a bottle of my favorite Monopolowa Vodka.
As always, drink responsibly.
