Luna de Jalisco Blanco Tequila is produced by Hacienda Capellania – a San Jose de Gracia, Jalisco based spirits company who produce a wide range of tequila brands.
Their tequilas are made using agave plants that are between 5-8 years old, and distilled twice using stainless steel stills with copper coils. They unfortunately don’t offer much production information that differentiates the various brands made at their facility. This particular bottle of Luna de Jalisco Blanco is a blanco tequila, so it’s safe to assume it’s unaged.
❖ ABV: 40%
❖ Distillery: Hacienda Capellania
❖ Aging: none
❖ Price Point: moderate
The aroma of this tequila seemed sweet, and was a bit surprising in the finish. There was a fresh, familiar scent that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but reminded me of being in a Mexican kitchen.
I took a sip, and there was a bit of heat in the back of my mouth and my throat. The flavor felt complex, with a mixture of fresh and warm qualities. Once again, it felt nostalgic, though I struggled to identify specific flavor notes that were causing the nostalgia. Something about it reminded me of standing in a kitchen where you can smell laundry detergent from the next room.
❖ 1oz lime juice
❖ 1.5 oz sweetened cranberry juice
❖ 1.5oz tequila
Inside of a cocktail, this tequila was quite nice. There were subtle notes of mild warm chile and tamarind, with a sense of freshness that paired well with the cranberry juice. It was overall very smooth against mixers.
RATING: 3/5
Overall, I enjoyed trying out this bottle of Luna de Jalisco Blanco Tequila. Although it’s certainly not my favorite tequila in this price range, it did exceed my low expectations based on the lack of information available for the brand.
I didn’t expect it to have much character or complexity at all, but I think it works well in cocktails, offering some interesting flavor notes as described above. I think it’s a decent choice for the price, though it doesn’t really stand out in a crowded market. At the end of the day, it’s just average.
As always, drink responsibly.
