Sunset Reef Coconut Rum is produced by Toorank International Spirits – a Zevenaar, Netherlands based distiller who produce a variety of different spirits brands to export to worldwide markets.
Unfortunately, no production information is disclosed for the Sunset Reef brand spirits. However, this bottle of Coconut Rum is advertised as a liqueur with the “flavour” of coconut and rum, leading me to believe that rum is not the base spirit.
❖ ABV: 21%
❖ Distillery: Toorank Distilleries
❖ Aging: undisclosed
❖ Price Point: low price
The aroma of this liqueur reminded me of the artificial coconut scent that is often used in sunscreen. After several sniffs, I also detected hints of vanilla, and a toasted coconut quality.
I took my first sip, and it was very flavorful. There was strong coconut water flavor in the front, followed by a not-so-pleasant alcohol flavor in the finish and aftertaste.
For my cocktail, I was intrigued by the mixed drink recipe on the back of the bottle called the Sunset Dream. Though simple, it sounded tasty, and like a good way to really put Sunset Reef to the test.
❖ 2oz coconut liqueur
❖ 6oz pineapple juice

Inside of a cocktail, this liqueur was mostly fine, but something tasted a little bit “off”. Compared to Malibu Coconut Rum, Sunset Reef is much more flavorful against mixers. However, the flavor itself tastes artificial, and has an unpleasant aftertaste that lingers into the next sip.
RATING: 1/5
Overall, I was pretty disappointed in this bottle of Sunset Reef Coconut Rum. Although I appreciated that there is more coconut flavor compared to Malibu brand, the quality of the flavor just didn’t cut it. As a result, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending this product, even for the low price point.
In addition, I don’t like the fact that this product most likely uses flavoring to try to mimic the taste of rum. Even for the price, it just seems lazy, and like they’re not even trying to create a good product. If you were thinking about purchasing Sunset Reef, don’t even bother.
As always, drink responsibly.
