Rear Admiral Joseph’s London Dry Gin

Rear Admiral Joseph’s London Dry Gin is produced by Glen Catrine Distillers – a United Kingdom based spirits producer. Based in Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, Glen Catrine includes the Rear Admiral Joseph’s brand as part of their exports for the American grocery chain Trader Joe’s.
Although they don’t disclose information about their production process, this particular bottle of London Dry Gin is advertised as an “original recipe”. It’s not specified what they mean by this, although one can deduce that it refers to one of Glen Catrine’s past gin products.
❖ ABV: 43%
❖ Distillery: Glen Catrine Distillers
❖ Aging: N/A
❖ Price Point: low price
I took a whiff of this gin, and the scent was fairly clean, with a slightly vegetal note, and a touch of alcohol aroma.
My first sip had quite a bit of heat. Overall, this gin was a bit harsh, and the flavor notes struggled to stand out against the heat and the tingling mouthfeel. I did taste a hint of bitter orange flavor in the background.
❖ 2oz dry gin
❖ 1oz lemon juice
❖ 1/2oz simple syrup
❖ 5-8 mint leaves
garnish: mint leaf/sprig
Inside of a cocktail, this gin was much smoother. Against mixers, it had a clean flavor without much character. It really let the mixers shine, and my drink was very tasty.
RATING: 3/5
Overall, I found Rear Admiral Joseph’s London Dry Gin to be uninspired, yet more impressive than other options in its price point. It provides a decently smooth cocktail, and can be a good option if you’re on a budget and not looking for anything that flavorful.
I can definitely see myself utilizing the rest of the bottle in simple cocktails, although I personally prefer gins that are more interesting, and that add more character to a drink. If you prefer something a little bit simpler and more inexpensive, go ahead and give Rear Admiral Joseph’s a try!
As always, drink responsibly.
