Captain Morgan White Rum

Captain Morgan White Rum is produced by Captain Morgan – a spirits brand founded by Seagram in the 1940s, and acquired by Diageo in 2001. Though it was originally produced in Jamaica, it is currently produced in St. Croix.
This particular bottle of white rum is made using molasses, and distilled 5 times in column stills. It is aged for about 1 year in white oak barrels.
❖ ABV: 40%

❖ Aging: 1 year
❖ Price Point: low price
I took a whiff of this rum, and the aroma was somewhat fruity, with a bit of a unique mustiness that reminded me of black olives.
I took my first sip, and it had a bit of a throat burn, and was overall not very smooth. The flavor was a bit dull, with that same subtle note that reminded me of olives, and a touch of sweetness.
❖ 2oz white rum
❖ 1.5oz pineapple juice
❖ 5ml maraschino liqueur
❖ 5ml grenadine syrup
garnish: maraschino cherry
As I smelled this cocktail with my nose, the pineapple juice made it seem nice and sweet – an illusion that was quickly shattered with my first sip. The rum brought an undeniable mustiness to the overall flavor, and this only got more and more unpleasant as I made my way through the drink. I feel this cocktail was drinkable, but only because the sweet mixers were doing so much legwork. It simply was not interesting or enjoyable.
As far as the recipe, I look forward to trying it again with a more suitable rum, as I do think it has the potential to be one of my new favorites.
RATING: 1/5
At the end of the day, I simply can’t recommend Captain Morgan White Rum for any circumstances. In fact, I think it’s been a really long time since I’ve been quite this disappointed in a bottle – even for a bottle in this price range. This rum is sure to ruin the flavor of even your favorite cocktails. Just don’t do it.
Not to mention, the symbolism and story of Captain Morgan is even worse than I thought when I sat down to begin my research. I feel that using Sir Henry Morgan’s image as a mascot is an atrocious celebration of colonization that I don’t recommend supporting.
For the price point, you’re better off going with something like Don Q, which has a smooth flavor for mixing, and a company with some actual ethics.
As always, drink responsibly.
