Rancho Escondido Agave Liqueur
Rancho Escondido Agave Liqueur is produced by Rancho Escondido – a Jalisco, Mexico based brand that produces a small range of agave based spirit products. Although I found a lot of conflicting information about how long the brand has been producing their agave liquors, they are hugely popular in Mexico, advertised as one of the top-selling alcohol products.
This particular bottle of Agave Liqueur is made with sugar cane alcohol and agave aguardiente, which is essentially a basic distilled spirit from agave. It is distilled twice, and then rested in white oak barrels for at least 3 months.
❖ ABV: 28%
❖ Distillery: Rancho Escondido
❖ Aging: rested for over 3 months
❖ Price Point: low price
I took a whiff of this liqueur, and the scent was light and sweet, with a slight hint of agave and lightly grape-like notes.
I began to sip, and the flavor had light agave notes, but was overall pretty watery. The alcohol was not super smooth, but not incredibly harsh either. All in all, nothing really stood out about my straight tasting.
❖ 2oz tequila or agave spirit
❖ 1oz banana liqueur
❖ 1oz lime juice
❖ 1/4oz simple syrup
My cocktail experience was a little more interesting. On my first sip, I got a strong wave of black pepper flavor, which was so surprising I thought I imagined it, and I’m still not 100% convinced that I didn’t. As I continued, the flavor of the agave liqueur really took a backseat to the other ingredients, in particular the banana liqueur. It was so unobtrusive that I almost felt it was adding length to the drink in the same way that water would.
RATING: 2/5
Overall, I enjoyed the experience of trying this bottle of Rancho Escondido Agave Liqueur, but did not feel particularly impressed or interested in purchasing another bottle in the future. The flavor is very light and nondescript, which is perhaps what so many people like about it, for the same reasons that vodka is popular. Unlike vodka, however, the alcohol content of this liqueur is on the lower side at 56 proof.
Personally, I prefer spirits that are a bit more interesting, especially when the marketing is so centered around the plant that’s used to make it. That said, the price is so low that being a bit bored is probably fair. And while the flavor was overly watery on it’s own, it blended in well enough with a cocktail. Though I can’t recommend Rancho Escondido Agave Liqueur at this time, there are probably worse things to spend your money on if you’re low on funds and choices.
As always, drink responsibly.
