About Heering Cherry Liqueur

Heering Cherry Liqueur is produced by Peter F. Heering – a Copenhagen, Denmark based spirits company founded in 1818. It was acquired by parent company De Kuyper Royal Distillers in 2017.

Cherry Heering is one of the first and most famous cherry liqueurs in existence. Although most production details are undisclosed, they do reveal that they use real cherries of the local Stevns variety, as well as other unnamed botanicals. It is matured in casks for up to 5 years using a solera system of aging.

My Tasting notes

I took a whiff of this liqueur, and the aroma was a bit earthy, with understated sweet cherry notes in the background.

I moved on to my first sip, and there were notes of cherry cough syrup, except smoother and more pleasant. As I continued, I felt fairly neutral about the flavor. I didn’t dislike it, but it didn’t feel particularly special or interesting either. I could definitely tell that this liqueur was designed for mixing rather than drinking on its own.

Cocktail

Yield: 1 drink

The Communist

Ingredients

  • 1oz gin
  • 1oz orange juice
  • 0.5oz Cherry Heering
  • 0.75oz lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled
  2. Strain the mixture into a small glass
  3. Garnish with a maraschino cherry

Inside of a cocktail, I felt similarly to how I felt during my straight tasting. The Cherry Heering tasted good, but was ultimately a bit underwhelming against mixers. That said, it was well balanced and smooth, bringing a subtle earthiness to the mixture.

Bottom Line

RATING: 3/5

At the end the day, this bottle of Cherry Heering tasted good, but was missing the wow factor that I was hoping for at this price point. Especially given that this cherry liqueur is one of the most famous of its kind, my expectations were set pretty high when I began my tasting. It simply was missing the complexity that I appreciate about similar liqueurs such as Luxardo Maraschino.

That said, this liqueur performed well inside a cocktail, balancing well and bringing a nice, well rounded smoothness. I would feel comfortable recommending it as a solid choice for a cherry liqueur, if you want something more on the sweet side.

As always, drink responsibly.
