About Bols Triple Sec

Bols Triple Sec is produced by Lucas Bols N.V., an Amsterdam based company with roots dating back to the late 1500s. In fact, the House of Bols Distillery is considered one of the oldest running distilleries in the world. The Bols brand produces a variety of spirits including Genevers, Liqueurs, and more.

This particular bottle of Bols Triple Sec uses Curaçao orange peels and other citrus for flavoring. Although Bols is a bit secretive about their exact recipe and production, triple secs are generally made using a neutral alcohol.

My Tasting notes

I began to pick out the nose notes, and they were immediately sweet. The orange aroma is light, refreshing, and smooth.

I took a sip, and found this liqueur to be very sweet. The orange flavor almost tastes candied, with no bitterness at all. Overall, the flavors are very consistent from one sip to the next, which is a double-edged sword. Personally, I like when spirits take me on a journey during tastings. While Bols tastes very good, it’s a bit unremarkable. The smoothness and the sweetness almost taste artificial.

Cocktail

For my cocktail, it was a no-brainer that I would need to make a classic Margarita. So often, folks associate Triple Sec with this particular drink – myself included. For that reason, it seemed like the perfect way to see how Bols holds up!

Margarita

❖ 2oz Tequila

❖ 1oz Triple Sec

❖ 1oz lime juice

❖ 1/4oz simple syrup

  1. Add ingredients to a shaker filled with ice, and shake until chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a cocktail glass.

Bols Triple Sec makes for a tasty Margarita. This liqueur adds a nice sweetness and dimension alongside the simple syrup, and lets the tequila take the spotlight. The overall flavor of my cocktail was well-balanced.

Bottom Line

RATING: 3/5

At the end of the day, Bols Triple Sec is not my favorite orange liqueur, but is a great budget choice for consistently good cocktails. It’s main strength is its reliability, since the flavor is so smooth and can pair with almost anything.

Although there isn’t anything particularly interesting about it, it’s a highly useful addition to anyone’s home bar. If you’re looking for a solid triple sec at a low price point, I would definitely recommend picking this up.

As always, drink responsibly.
