Heaven Hill is such a big player in American whiskey that I completely forgot they also produce Elijah Craig Small Batch. After reviewing Rittenhouse Rye and Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond recently, I was intending to try some other American distilleries but I guess I’m just drawn to Heaven Hill this year. It also doesn’t help that the Small Batch bottle doesn’t mention Heaven Hill. But it does have an embossed “1789” on bottle in honor of Elijah Craig’s contribution to bourbon history. Elijah Craig was a baptist preacher turned capitalist from Georgetown, Kentucky who is known as the creator of bourbon by being the first person in the […]
While I looked around the internet for new bourbons, I noticed different distilleries would have a barrel proof option. The marketing successfully gave me the impression these bottles were special and I was immediately curious. Wild Turkey Rare Breed was one of the names I saw most often.
Wild Turkey is produced by Wild Turkey distilling company in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. They have been producing whiskey for decades and have grown into one of the biggest names in bourbon. They began when The Ripy brothers started distilling bourbon in the late 1800’s and would sell their whiskey to a wholesale grocer named Austin Nichols throughout the […]
The Dalmore 12 Year is the least expensive entry in the Principle Collection of whiskies from The Dalmore Distillery. This legendary distillery was founded in 1839 and is located in the Northern Highland region of Scotland. Each of the different Scottish regions produce distinctly flavored whiskies and the Highland scotches tend to have sweet and fruity notes.
In order to produce the specific flavor of this scotch, the Dalmore uses two types of barrels in the aging process. The scotch spends the first 9 years in ex-bourbon barrels then 50% of the whiskey is transferred to oloroso sherry casks. The two vessel […]
Rittenhouse Rye Bottled-In-Bond is a budget friendly rye whiskey from Heaven Hill distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Rye is the primary grain in this style of whiskey and has more herbal and spice flavors compared to other common American whiskies like bourbon.
Even though bourbon is the most famous American whiskey, Rye was actually the first. But it has been largely ignored for decades and only recently started gaining popularity with established distilleries looking to expand their product lines. And Heaven Hill looked to where rye originated for inspiration for Rittenhouse. The name comes from Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, […]
Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond is a popular and widely available bourbon from Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. There are a few entries in the Evan Williams line of bourbons and each has a different color label to distinguish the bourbon style and price point. The Bottled-in-Bond has a white label and is available across the US for under $20.
Bourbon was first distilled in the late 1700’s in Kentucky. Corn was a popular crop in that region of America so distillers started using it in their whiskey. This led to a generally sweeter flavor profile compared to European whiskies. In the decades since, bourbon has continued to […]
