Riverboat Rye Whiskey

In an effort to try more whiskies besides scotch and bourbon, I used my latest trip to Total Wine to pick up some new bottles, including this bottle of Riverboat Rye Whiskey. There was surprisingly little information about the distillery behind Riverboat Rye, or the whiskey itself. I could only find a few retail links, but no official website or anything. But luckily, there was a decent amount of information both stated and implied on the bottle label. Riverboat is a straight rye whiskey, so it is aged at least 2 years in new, charred oak barrels, and contains at least 51% rye grain in the mash bill. The bottle states the spirit is […]

Knob Creek Bourbon

Since some of my favorite cocktails call for bourbon whiskey, I’m always looking to try new bourbon bottles, especially when they’re at reasonable prices. And, a name I saw repeatedly mentioned online was Knob Creek Bourbon, so I was excited to try it for myself.

Knob Creek was first introduced in 1992 by distiller Booker Noe, a descendent of famous bourbon distiller Jim Beam, and meant as an homage to pre-prohibition era bourbon. The whiskey is aged for a minimum of 9 years in charred white oak barrels. BOTTLE SPECS ❖ Spirit: Bourbon Whiskey ❖ Distillery: Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, KY ❖ ABV: 50% (100 Proof) ❖ Aged 9 years […]

Bulleit Rye Whiskey

It feels like I see a Bulleit Frontier Whiskey bottle in every bar I visit, so it immediately came to mind when I was looking for a new whiskey to try. And, since I’ve also been looking to gain more experience with rye whiskey, now seemed like a great time to check out Bulleit Rye. Bulleit is a relatively new American whiskey company that was founded in 1987 by Tom Bulleit. Ownership of the brand has changed hands a few times, but it’s currently owned by International spirit company, Diageo. I was surprised at the lack of information about the brand history or the founder on the official Bulleit website, but it’s probably because of […]

10th Street California Coast Whisky

Even though I’ve tried dozens of American whiskies, not many are from distilleries outside of Kentucky and Tennessee. But, the number of distilleries is increasing as the general popularity of whisky continues to grow, and I’m excited to check out some bottles from my home state of California. And luckily, my friend had a similar idea when he gifted me this bottle of 10th Street California Coast Whisky from the San Jose based distillery, 10th Street Distillery. After completing a whisky apprenticeship in the Islay region of Scotland, engineer Virag Saksena, along with chemical engineer and old college roommate Vishal Gauri, wanted bring […]

Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch

Of all the many different types of Scotch whisky, I have the least familiarity with blended scotch. And while browsing for something new to try, I was immediately drawn to the three brass monkeys on the bottle of Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch whisky. Blended Scotches are made using a mixture of whiskies from different distilleries, and a variety of grains can be used. Monkey Shoulder is a blend of 3 different malt whiskies from the Speyside region of Scotland. Monkey Shoulder is a relatively new offering from one of the oldest scotch making families, William Grant & Sons. They opened their first distillery in 1887, and continue to […]
