About Seedlip Notas de Agave

Seedlip Notas de Agave is produced by Seedlip – an England based non-alcoholic spirits company that produces a handful of alcohol substitutes such as gin, tequila, and more. Founded in 2015 by Ben Branson, Seedlip was the first non-alcoholic spirits brand on the market, aiming to create high quality, botanical-focused options for mocktails. The majority shares of the company were bought out by Diageo in 2019.

Each of Seedlip’s products are made using natural botanicals, which are distilled separately using one of several techniques, but mainly steam distillation. The distillates are blended together, and then microfiltered to remove impurities. Their products contain less than 0.05% alcohol, and are advertised as sugar-free and sweetener-free.

This particular bottle of Notas de Agave was introduced in 2024, and is made blending the flavors of agave, lime, and prickly pear.

My Tasting notes

I took my first whiff, and there was a strong apple scent, followed by a faint hint of orange. As I continued, there was a sweetness similar to the scent of caramel apple. Eventually, it dawned on me that the aroma was not actually apple, but prickly pear.

Although you’re not really supposed to drink non-alcoholic spirits straight, I do enjoy tasting them this way for the sake of curiosity when I write a review. When I took a sip of Notas de Agave, there was a fresh water taste in the front, followed by prickly pear and a complex spice flavor. It was very interesting!

Cocktail

Yield: 1 drink

Virgin Agave Daisy

Coupe glass partway filled with yellow liquid and a lemon wheel on the rim, sitting on a wooden table

Ingredients

  • 2oz non-alcoholic tequila
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 1/2oz orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 small slice orange peel
  • splash of soda water

Instructions

  1. Add the non-alcoholic tequila, lemon juice, orange juice, and orange peel to an ice-filled shaker, and shake until chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a small glass.
  3. Top with a splash of club soda.

Inside of a cocktail, Notas de Agave had a sense of warmth in the front, similar to the flavor of brown sugar. After several sips, the prickly pear began to emerge a bit. Towards the end of the glass, there was also a subtle spice flavor. I couldn’t taste any notes of agave at all.

Bottom Line

RATING: 3/5

Overall, I thought this bottle of Seedlip Notas of Agave was good, but a bit of a let down from my high expectations. Given the price point and brand reputation, I really expected it to be excellent. However, the flavor just seemed to lack any sort of wow factor, despite being reasonably pleasant.

I would have liked to have tasted more (or really any) agave in the overall flavor, given that this is meant to be a tequila alternative. In addition, the spice flavors felt frustratingly faint – like the feeling of trying to scratch an itch and not quite getting the right spot. They may as well have not included any spices at all.

Ultimately, I think this tequila alternative just kind of missed the mark.

As always, drink responsibly.
