Brugal Añejo Superior Rum is produced by Brugal & Co. – a Dominican Republic based rum brand. Founded as a family-run company in 1888 by Don Andres Brugal Montaner, it was acquired by Edrington Group in 2008. Still, the rum production is done under the guidance of 5th generation master “roneros” Jassil Villanueva and Miguel Ripoll.
Each of their rums are made using locally-sourced molasses, fermented with a proprietary yeast strain, and then distilled twice in steel column stills. It is then diluted and aged. Brugal takes extra pride in the wood casks used to age their rum, which include both American Oak ex-bourbon and European Oak ex-sherry. The warm sunshine in the area also contributes to the aging process and character of the rums.
This particular bottle of Añejo Superior Rum is a blend of rums aged between 2-5 years in American Oak casks.
❖ ABV: 40%
❖ Distillery: Destillería Casa Brugal
❖ Aging: 2-5 years
❖ Price Point: low price
The nose notes of this rum were light and airy. After a few sniffs, there was also a light molasses scent in the background.
I took a sip, and the heat of the alcohol was very tingly. There was not much flavor in the front, but there was a warm sweetness in the finish. Overall, it was not as smooth as I had hoped, but not super harsh either.
For my cocktail, I went searching for some classic Dominican cocktails, and found this recipe for a simple Cuba Libre variation using sprite. Called the Santo Libre, this drink is named after the capitol city of Santo Domingo.
❖ 2oz rum
❖ 6oz Sprite or 7 Up
❖ 1/2oz lime juice
Against mixers, this rum was pretty smooth. I felt that it added a nice warmth to the citrus flavors of the lime and sprite. There was also a hint of vanilla in the background. Overall, I found that the flavor was very consistent from sip to sip.

RATING: 5/5
At the end of the day, Brugal Añejo Superior Rum is pretty impressive for its price point. Although it lacked the complexity I generally want out of an aged rum, I feel that it makes a great affordable mixer for situations when you are not looking to spend very much. The flavor was consistent, well balanced, and had everyone in my household asking for Santo Libres the rest of the weekend.
Although it’s certainly not my favorite aged rum out there, I do think it will become my go-to low cost choice. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, I highly recommend trying out Brugal Añejo for yourself.
As always, drink responsibly.
