Despite reviewing plenty of affordable bourbons, there is still a few popular brands I’ve never tried before. And I thought the new year was a perfect time to try out a Four Roses product with Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon. The history of the Four Roses brand begins around 1888, when the name was trademarked by whiskey producer Paul Jones Jr. The whiskey’s production continued in Louisville, Kentucky until its purchase by the Seagram company in 1943. The Four Roses brand was then discontinued in the US in the 1950’s, but its sale continued in Europe and Asia. It was made available in the United States again in 2002 when Kirin Brewery […]
There are few things more iconic in bourbon than the bright red wax bottle top of Maker’s Mark Bourbon. It always catches my eye on store shelves, but I’d never tasted it until now. Maker’s Mark was first put into production in 1953 by Bill Samuel, Sr. He and multiple generations of his family have continued to run the distillery on the same grounds in Loretto, Kentucky called Star Hill Farm. While Bill Samuels ran the distillery operations, his wife, Margie, had just as big an impact on Maker’s Mark. She named it, designed the logo and and came up with the iconic waxed dipped bottle top. There’s nothing better than a refreshing whiskey cocktail during the hot summer months, so it’s the perfect time to try some reasonably priced bourbon. And Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one those bottles I see everywhere, but never actually tasted, so I was excited to finally give it a shot.
Woodford Reserve is a relatively new brand with a long history in Kentucky whiskey. The Woodford Reserve brand was launched in 1996, but its distillery was originally built in the early 1800’s. The distillery changed hands a few times over the next century until the current owners, Brown-Forman, purchased the land in the […]
Since some of my favorite cocktails call for bourbon whiskey, I’m always looking to try new bourbon bottles, especially when they’re at reasonable prices. And, a name I saw repeatedly mentioned online was Knob Creek Bourbon, so I was excited to try it for myself.
Knob Creek was first introduced in 1992 by distiller Booker Noe, a descendent of famous bourbon distiller Jim Beam, and meant as an homage to pre-prohibition era bourbon. The whiskey is aged for a minimum of 9 years in charred white oak barrels. BOTTLE SPECS ❖ Spirit: Bourbon Whiskey ❖ Distillery: Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, KY ❖ ABV: 50% (100 Proof) ❖ Aged 9 years […]
Even with hundreds of years of bourbon distilling history in Kentucky, there hasn’t been an African-American owned distillery until Brough Brothers opened in 2019. After working in spirit distribution overseas, Victor Yarbrough decided to start a bourbon distillery with his two brothers, Bryson and Chris. They chose west end Louisville, Kentucky as the location for the distillery, as it’s where they grew up and they wanted to support the local community. Brough Brothers currently only produce this bourbon, but are looking to expand to gin and vodka in the future. The bottle design also celebrates Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to the […]
